In October 1996 the Federal Communications Commission ruled that it was illegal for any building owner or association board to prevent their residents from ordering satellite programming and installing a satellite dish in order to receive the channels offered. This rule was amended in 1999 to include rental tenants. We are not proponents against satellite programming as they provide a valuable service to us but there are things about satellite dish installations which you should be aware of when ordering the service. The most important of these is if not installed properly using a non-penetrating mounting plate, they will cause permanent damage to the home or building structure and:
- Immediately void your roof or siding's manufacturer's, developers, and contractors warranties. Thought you had a 25-year warranty on your roof? Not any more...
- Open your home up to exterior and interior damage and repair.
- Since the repair damage is not covered by your homeowners or commercial building insurance, the average repair from a dish installation could easily run $1250 or more.
- If you're a tenant or HOA association member, in addition to being fined or losing your deposit, you can actually be sued in a civil court for destruction of private property.
Whether residential, multifamily, commercial, or municipal- many of us didn't realize that when we signed up for that cable satellite package, the dish was ours for life whether we were still using the service or not. Not only is that dish staying put, but if you or anyone else whom moves into your home, apartment, condo, or office building: re-orders satellite programming from either the same company or one of its competitors, the installation provider is not allowed to re-use the existing dish as they are required by the programmer to always install a new dish. This is done normally within inches of the original one.
Satellite television, radio, and internet broadcasting is over a 10 Billion-dollar a year industry with an estimated 6,000 dishes being installed each and every day. And this is just in the US.
